Every year, irrespective of creed, tribe and faith, Nigerians unite to celebrate a historic period in the journey of the nation. As part of events marking the celebrations of Nigeria’s 58th Independence, and in the spirit of unifying national values that bring together diverse people under a single umbrella of a national identity, the wife of the President Dr. (Mrs) Aisha Buhari organized a picnic outing for children from Internally Displaced Camps and Children’s Homes in Abuja.
The aim was to integrate children who were displaced by insurgency as well as orphaned school children into the National Day Celebrations. According to Hajiya Aisha Bunu, a member of the Organising Committee, the wife of the President extended a hand of love to children in celebration of Nigeria at 58. It was a fun filled atmosphere at Harrows Park on Saturday the 29th of September for over 500 children from IDP settlements and Children’s Homes in Abuja as they celebrated Nigeria at 58.
Some fun activities that kept the children entertained were face painting, water sports, Bouncing Castle, Table Tennis, Mascots, Car games, Balloon games etc. Funfair activities are enjoyable light-hearted ways of fostering a sense of unity. The children felt a sense of belonging and genuine ove for their country Nigeria as the funfair ignited the patriotic fervor in them. The children had so much to eat ranging from popcorns, ice cream, rice, drinks, cupcakes etc. The picnic surely left indelible memories of Nigeria’s Independence celebration on the minds of the children. The event ended with the distribution of many gift items.
