The Music Face of 2 Baba

Innocent Ujah Idibia, popularly known by his stage name 2face or 2Baba is one of the most decorated and successful Afro pop artist in African. He has consistently been ranked as one of the best African musicians of all time. He is prolific, versatile and one of the most bankable artist around. 2face is internationally known to dish out fantastic songs to his fans and he is loved by both the young and the old. He has come a along way and he is indeed a role model to many entertainers. The award winning Nigerian singer, songwriter, record producer and entrepreneur was born in Jos, Plateau State, North Central Nigeria, on the 18th of September, 1975. He is from the Idoma ethnic group in the southern part of Benue State, in central Nigeria. Prior to July 2014, he used the stage name 2face Idibia. He thereafter preferred to be called 2Baba. According to him, the stage name 2Face (Tuface) was adopted in1996 because he was trying to draw a line between his personal life and business life.

It is on record that the talented artist has received numerous awards. Some of the awards include, the one MTV Europe Music Award, one World Music Award, five Headies Awards (Hip-hop award), four Channel O Music Video Awards and one BET award. Others are four MTV Africa Music Awards, one MOBO award, one KORA award, and numerous additional nominations. The young 2face attended Mount Saint Gabriel’s Secondary School in Makurdi, Benue State. He thereafter enrolled at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, Nigeria, where he attended his preliminary National Diploma course in business administration and management.

While at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, he performed at various school shows and parties within Enugu metropolis just to entertain and make extra money. He performed in schools like the University of Nigeria and Enugu State University of Science and Technology. While still in school in 1996, 2face composed songs and performed at the famous radio show GB Fan Club at the Enugu State Broadcasting Services. 2face eventually dropped out of school to pursue his music career. He relocated to the commercial city of Lagos and teamed up with two of his friends, Blackface (Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo) and Faze (Chibuzor Oji) to form a boy band called the Plantashun Boiz. He had earlier met BlackFace during his school days at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu. The Plantashun Boiz released two successful albums, ‘Body and Soul’ and ‘Sold Out’ in the year 2000 and 2003 respectively, under Nelson Brown’s Label (Dove Records).

The group eventually disbanded in 2004 and each member pursued his solo career. Surprisingly, the band came back together in 2007 for the purpose of recording a third and final album titled ‘Plan B’. After the group was disbanded in 2004, 2face Idibia released his debut solo album titled ‘Face 2 Face’ which eventually established him as a viable solo artist. Two years after his first album, he went on to released his second album titled ‘Grass 2 Grace’ in 2006. The album contains hit tracks like ‘One Love’, ‘True Love’, ‘4 Instance’. His African Queen single which was released in 2006, made him more popular because his listeners could easily sing along when the music is being played. African Queen was used as the sound track of the 2006 comedy film ‘Phat Girlz’.

In addition to his previous albums, 2face released yet another promotion album in 2008 titled ‘The Unstoppable’. He also released a single titled ‘Enter the Place’. However, due to problems associated with album distribution in 2007, the release date of the album was shifted from 2008 to early 2009. In 2010, 2face released the international edition titled ‘The Unstoppable International Edition’. With the international edition, he became the first Nigerian artist to ever have an international album that is appropriately priced. He also released two more singles from the international version of his Unstoppable album. The international edition of the album eventually won two awards at the 2010 SoundCity Music Video Awards. He also won the Channel O Music Video Awards, Best African Western award and the MTV Africa Music Awards for Best Male and Artist of the year. 2fsce has been featured in numerous songs by various artists.

He decided to set up his own record label known as Hypertek Entertainment after he left Kennis music record. He is part of the Sony All African One8 Project together with seven other musicians across Africa and he recorded a single with R. Kelly and Prince Lee titled ‘Hands Across the World’. It is also interesting to known that 2face is the first non Liberian to become an honorary member of the Liberian music society in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of music in Africa. 2face is a Red cross ambassador. He has several notable music collaborations with other artists all around the world. He collaborated with 9ice for the popular song street credibility. He also collaborated with P-Square for possibility. In 2014 2face and popular American Rapper Jay Z met in NYC.

2face Idibia has also been a brand ambassador for quite a number of companies and organizations including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Guinness, Nigerian Breweries and a few others. He released a song titled ‘Man Unkind’ to raise awareness on the menace of fake and sub­standard food and drug products in Nigeria. On the 20th of September 2015, 2face organized a concert tagged ‘The FORTYfied All-Star Tribute Concert’, at the Eko Hotel and Suites Convention Centre, Lagos, to commemorate his 40th birthday. The show was hosted by Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth, and it was sponsored by STAR Lager Beer. The concert was attended by many dignitaries and it featured performances from notable Nigerian musicians including Timaya, Wizkid, Burna Boy, D’banj , Patoranking, Vector tha Viper, Wande Coal, Seyi Shay and Sound Sultan.

2face has 7 children from 3 different women namely, Pero Adeniyi, Sumbo Ajaba – Adeoye and Annie Idibia. He eventually married one of his baby mamas, actress Annie Macaulay, with whom he has two daughters on the 2nd of May 2012, in Lagos, Nigeria at a private ceremony. Annie Macaulay and 2Face had their traditional wedding on the 8th of March 2013 in Eket, Akwa-Ibom State Nigeria. The couple also had a white wedding in Dubai, on the 23rd of March 2013. A lot of Nigerian and Ghanaian celebrities attended the Dubai weeding. His children are Isabel, Nino, Zion, Justin, Rose, Innocent and Olivia. The music Icon owns a five bedroom duplex at Richmond Gate Estate. The luxurious five bedroom duplex has a gym, mini studio, two siWng rooms in addition to other personalized components. 2Baba as he is famously known, is estimated to be worth 22 million dollars. He makes his money from his music, shows, endorsements and other business interests.

In 2009, he became the recipient of the prestigious International Youth Ambassador for Peace Summit and the Nigeria Youth Merit Award. The award was presented to him by the National Youth Council of Nigeria in recognition of his contributions to youth development in the country.  He has also participated as one of the Judges in music talent hunt show ‘The Voice Nigeria’ alongside other artists like Timi Dakolo, Patoranking and Waje.

Lately, 2face has been dedicating his time to promoting a violent free political campaigns and elections. He is often seen on some TV stations encouraging the youth to shun violence and resist being used as political thugs to cause mayhem by irresponsible politicians.
